Dental Cleanings in Highlands Ranch, CO
Beautiful, Healthy Smiles Start with Regular Dental Cleanings
Caring for your teeth, gums, and mouth is essential to the overall health of your entire body. You can do your best at home with routine brushing and flossing, but having regular dental cleanings scheduled is vital for preventing and early detection of gum and mouth disease. While the American Dental Association recommends having a dental cleaning and exam every six months, each mouth is unique and has needs that may require more frequent dental cleanings.
At Highlands Ranch Dental Group, our routine exam and cleaning schedule will:
- Help you avoid expensive, intrusive, and preventable dental procedures or emergencies later on.
- Remove built-up plaque, tartar, and bacteria that cause tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath.
- Eliminate stains that discolor the teeth.
- Give you a healthy smile.
What to Expect
Our licensed hygienist will begin your routine cleaning by a thorough examination of the surface of your teeth. They will look specifically for cavities and any signs of tooth decay; they will also examine your gums for any signs of separation from the teeth, periodontal disease, or bone loss.
The hygienist will carefully use various dental tools to remove any excess build-up of tartar from each tooth. They will then remove tartar, polish and floss your teeth, and apply fluoride. Unfortunately, the longer a patient waits between dental cleanings, the more tartar is deposited on each tooth, making cleanings longer, more complex, and sometimes uncomfortable.
If the hygienist finds an issue during your cleanings, such as cavities or tooth decay, the dentist will talk to you about your brushing and flossing routine at home and make suggestions. In addition, the dentist may also recommend dental procedures, such as cavity treatment, to help combat any ailments that may have been found.
Cavity Treatment & Prevention
If your routine dental cleaning revealed a cavity, the dentist will most likely recommend a filling. This is the easiest and fastest way to correct the issue. During this procedure, we’ll numb the area surrounding the tooth, remove the decayed portion, and “fill” it. For bigger cavities, we may recommend a different treatment.
Oral Cancer Screenings
At your regular appointment, you will be given the option to get an oral cancer screening. The dentist will look inside your mouth and may examine your throat and neck to look for any concerns related to oral cancer. The earlier oral cancer is located and diagnosed, the higher chances are that the affected patient will have a full, successful recovery.
